ROUTE - ROAD CONDITIONS, TRAFFIC, AVAILABILITY OF AMENITIES & WEATHER:
Road conditions are good most of the way. Traffic is high only on a few stretches. You can expect very different climates.
GOA-MANGALORE (0-350km) - South of Goa, there are some stretches where roads are under construction and that is the section which has some local traffic during the day, which is when most riders will go thru it.. There is good availability of food, water, etc on this stretch. The route from Goa hugs the coast till Mangalore and will be humid, probably mid 30 in day to mid 20 in night.
MANGALORE-KUNIGAL (on Bangalore Highway 350-617km) - After we leave Mangalore the road conditions are great with less traffic. The first part of this stretch, 350-425km rolls gently through the countryside, with few amenities, before the climb starts up the Western Ghats. This ,the climbing section is fabulous, climbing through hillsides covered in dense forests. The climb up they the forest section will be cool by day and cold by night. Ensure you have enough water and food as this is a fairly remote section. At night you will find very little food or water available after Mangalore. As one approaches the top (456km) you will be riding through coffee and spice plantations and can expect some local and tourist traffic. Sakleshpur 469km will have amenities and food and water. After that it is gently sloping terrain, wide dual carriageway with some amenities available at the towns/villages on the route till Kunigal. The part from hassan till Kunigal will be warm in the day, getting drier, and the night cool.
KUNIGAL-BELGAUM (on Bangalore Mumbai highway 617-1080km) – The first 35 km are on a country road as you leave the Mangalore-Bangalore highway to join the Mumbai-Bangalore highway at Tumakuru. From Tumkur till Belgaum (657-1083km) the route follows the highway which has a wide shoulder, fair amount of highway traffic but little local traffic as it is well ordered throughout with parallel service roads wherever necessary. Amenities are available but not always visible from the highway, you may need to get onto a service road as it approaches a town/village to find food and water. There are some long (25km) stretches with nothing so if you are running short, please stock up when you do see facilities. The part from Kunigal till Belgaum, will be hot in the day, dry, maybe wind and the night temperatures will drop below 20.
BELGAUM-BOGMALO (via The lovely Chorla Ghat 1080-1218km) - Going thru Belgaum there will be traffic, depending on the time of day. After you leave Belgaum the road rolls up and down through countryside that starts changing to forest. Then it goes down a densely covered forest section similar to the climb up. Amenities will be sparse in the day and unavailable at night until you reach the Goa border. At night this section is cold and moist, especially as you will be going down. By day it will be cool. When you enter Goa, you may get some traffic, and the climate will get hot and humid again! But you are almost done and can look forward to a cool beer on Bogmalo beach!
